I had this sense of deja vu just now.

I had this sense of deja vu just now.

I was talking to a student about "proletarian shoppers" and I couldn't quite remember which of John Fiske's books he discusses shopping malls. A little google fou and up comes six responses, the top one of which is a review. Of Rob Latham's Consuming Youth. From an academic journal. I click on the link, anxious to learn more.

It turns out to be the review I wrote for Historical Materialism. Ho hum. It's like I'm stalking myself.

I have had that experience. I can't remember what I was researching, but I pulled up an entry from online list archives, and read it, thinking that the writer seemed to be saying pretty sensible things. Only when I got to the end did I realize it was something I'd written over a decade ago.

The marvel in my case would be finding myself saying pretty sensible things - since my instinct is to self-deprecate. I guess if I didn't know it were written by me until the end I might not just spot the flaws.

I guess when editing and re-editing the Pratchett book I got to a point when I couldn't what out what I'd written and what other people had.
