I think I would have gone for Johnny Maxwell rather than Hat Full of Sky (but then Only You Can Save Mankind is set against the context of a pointless Gulf War so would clearly be dated ...)
No Diane Wynne Jones, no Anne Halam, no Charles Butler.
I'm not sure about pushing Hitch-Hikers as a children's book, though I did read it when I were a lad.

I'm curious about the authors who go by intials - whether the obscuring of gender is still a good idea for f writers. I know NM Browne and EE Richardson are female...the interwebs reveal FE Higgins is also f, JA Henderson & AJ Butcher are m, HI Larry's identity is secret and I can't dig up anything on EL Young. Nothing to conclude there really, other than to observe the proportion of f writers amongst those identified only by initials is higher than on the list as a whole.

Or something.
J.R.R (and C.S., omitted here) the historical exception(s).
M.T. Anderson (not here) in some markets.
Not sure if the Higson is the first Bond book or not.
The last Snicket is just a perverse choice.
