I think I would have gone for Johnny Maxwell rather than Hat Full of Sky (but then Only You Can Save Mankind is set against the context of a pointless Gulf War so would clearly be dated ...)
No Diane Wynne Jones, no Anne Halam, no Charles Butler.
I'm not sure about pushing Hitch-Hikers as a children's book, though I did read it when I were a lad.
