I was dozing, as is my habit it seems, and at about 8.20 the bed went boing. Oh, an earthquake, I said, and turned over.
The epicentre was 15 miles south of here - I suspect that
brisingamen probably would have felt it more and may be without electricity. No immediate structural damage here, but has been reported at other towns in the area.

Edit: A 5 recorded south west of here. Epicentre now declared to be 12km south of Dover, ie in the straits, although the BBC's map is confused as to where that is.

Edit; The BBC have now found Dover, it appears. Probably I ought to look at my roof but the cracks in my plaster seem the same size and the washing up is still perilously spread.

"The seagulls went crazy and in parts of Dover the electricity is off."
LT COL SYDNEY CARR, DEAL
I have experienced an earthquake in Cyprus and the tremors this morning were definitely similar, I would estimate an earthquake of about three to four.
HENDRICK VAN ECK, CANTERBURY
I was lying in bed and it felt as if someone had just got up from bed next to me.

"The most read story in Africa is: Earthquake shakes parts of Kent"
Charity single: "Do they Know it's Timket?".
"There's a world outside your window, and it's a world of dread and fear
Where the only water flowing is the mighty river Stour
And the Timket bells that ring there, are the clanging chimes of doom
Well, tonight, thank God it's them, instead of you
And it won't be dry in Canta-bry, this Timket time
The greatest gift they'll get this year is a model of the Cathedral.
(Oooh) Where noone but tourists ever goes
No rain nor rivers flow aside from the Stour
Do they know it's Timket time at all"

Mine is just going "gurgle" in response (obviously the mighty river Stour).
