Pubs are Born Free and Everywhere are in Chains

This dates back to before 1954 - freehouse clearly being taken seriously in those days. But with Harveys Brewery - and the Star Brewery at some point - why would you want beer from Croydon? I wonder if any survives.

'Freehouse' seems to have been taken seriously until JD Wetherspoon came along and declared it just meant 'not tied to a brewery' - which it does, but it also used to mean 'independent pub' which JDWs certainly aren't.

And what would be wrong with beer from Croydon. Page and Overton closed in 1957. Mr Overton was the owner of the first gas works in Croydon.
