I had hoped that this year I could get involved in NaNoWriMo, and for the couple of days I was writing it was great, and reminded me how much I miss that part of being creative.

However, I have written nothing since, although I wish to continue with what I'm producing as it's been an idea I've been interested in for years, and I need to retrofit it back into the one and a half novels I wrote before the Pratchett Book/Routledge Companion intervened. I am less than ten per cent in rather than a quarter of the way in.

I have an index to proofread, 100,000 words to finish copyediting and three articles to finish writing. I have also spent this week fannying around worrying about things I cannot change. I cannot see much writing getting done - I had assumed the other requirements would make me productive as displacement, but it aint displacing.

So I invoke the spirit of Da Rules, which means it will get done, but only if it's enjoyable, and only if it allows, say, redefining November as lasting until December 31st at the earliest. I will not beat myself up.

I am not throwing in the towel, I am merely hanging it over the radiator to make it less damp.

Edit: I have at least fitted in three lousy little edits I was meant to do a month or so back. Which will help on the copyedit.

Edit 2: I just have too many other things I need to get done that the thing I'm doing for myself ends up suffering. There's a pattern there.

Ok, I had a chat with myself and decided my gaff, my rules, so -

On Long Distance Walks

These will be completed in the order that they are completed in, so I don't have to start at one end and don't have to walk the same direction, nor do I have to do specific routes in order if it's more convenient not to.

Whilst from the point of view of checking out public transport I will Have A Plan, the failure to reach town a or b is simply a walk postponed not a sign of weakness. If I'm in the middle of nowhere I am vulnerable, and more vulnerable if alone.

Whilst I will aim to follow the official route, deviations from this due to local conditions, weather, blockages, exhaustion, map reading errors etc do not mean I have to go back and do it again properly. Although if I choose to, that's my own lookout.

I am trying to get fit, but this is meant to be fun.
