Bicycle Races have Gone that Way
I spent much of Sunday in the pub, and wandered down to the Cross Keys corner to see what was going on. There were various people on bicycles, and a growing crowd. Every five minutes a van or a cop or a police van went past. There was some kind of calvade, but I missed it.I returned at 3.30, and waited, watching rain clouds gather, as the peloton were ten km out.
Then, suddenly, without warning, they were upon us. When I'd left the pub, there were three bikes ahead of the pack. This was just pack and a couple of stragglers. It was all over seconds later. What struck me was the carbon footprint. The ringroad at 3.30am that morning had had thirty or more panopiticon lorries parked along it. I saw several dozen motorbikes (which struck me as cheating - they have an unfair advantage over the cyclists), a score of police cars. Why so big an advance party?

I believe there was also a Battle of Britain fly past.
(Don't mention the war)
