One for the Reading List...

"Henry Nicholls's Lonesome George [...] unravels the history of a conservation icon, a 200lb giant tortoise, aged somewhere between 60 and 200, which was rescued from a remote Galapagos island, threatened by knife-wielding protesters, and has steadfastly refused to produce sperm, despite the efforts of a Swiss graduate student."

Perhaps Swiss people just don't do it for giant tortoises. Wrong ethnic type. Just too, damn, landlocked.

Maybe the knife-wielding protesters put him off his game just a bit.

And what is this student doing? Never mind, I don't think I want to know.

Now in Scandinavia and other sophisticated locales they could have found copies of Playtortoise and Green and Crisp, just to get the juices started. Switzerland... brotherly love, five hundred years of democracy and peace, and the cuckoo clock.

What were they protesting? Was it an illegal immigrant? (No, it was *rescued*, but presumably people thought, they come over here, they eat our lettuces, they kill our playwrights... I blame the eagle, myself)
