11:00 AM Thirteenth chapter

I didn't get down to it at 9.00, and it took a while for the juices to start flowing again, but I've written probably half, certainly a third, of what will be the final chapter. I'm having a little bit of trouble keeping the total structure in mind, but it'll come into focus, I'm sure. I was able to drop in some echoes of the first two chapters - for a while I was under the misapprehension that this would come between those two chapters, but that's not the way the two arcs will work.

4:01 PM Chapters 14-15

I've written more today than I did yesterday, if still not enough as I'd like, and the total stands at 22,000 words. At this rate, I'm on target for 35,000 words, far fewer than I'd hoped, but roughly a third of the novel.

My character is now in exile, and won't return until tomorrow afternoon (so to speak), but I managed to solve a problem of who he gets to interact with if he's abroad. I need a few more characters, because I need to dispense with his current company before he comes back home again.

It's been a while since the last heinous violence. I must come up with a reason for some.

6:04 PM Next Chapter

Another block of time finished - that leaves this evening and tomorrow's three sessions. The characters are still talking to each other, but it's a little short on action. It's difficult to dramatise their isolation if other people are there, but it needs something. Ah well, over the next three chapters he's going to have a series of visitors - including people in his trade and a long lost daughter. Time to shake him up. 23435 words total.

End of Day Three

The total stands at 25655 words, again down on what I wanted, but things do feel clearer even if I'm not typing as fast as I can. (35000 words looks on the money, but that includes the best day in the average.)

Chandler said something about when in doubt bring a man through the door with a gun in his hand. Something like five chapters in this arc are about bringing in visitors. I don't what this to be like the danger-feast-danger-feast structure of Lord of the Rings or the chase-be chased formula of the first season of 24 (which means someone needs amnesia tomorrow), but this stranger as visitor trope worries me a little. Hopefully when I flesh it out and suture it together this will seem less blatant. I'm sure the world connects up, but it's an island hopping narrative in terms of covering sixty years.
