Gypsy 83 (Todd Stephens, 2001)
An ugly duckling road movie - Gypsy lives with her widowed dad, works at a photo booth and hangs out with an 18-year-old goth-type Clive in small-town Ohio. Teased once too often about her past, Gypsy and Clive set off for a Stevie Nicks convention in New York, half expecting to meet Gypsy's singer mother. Along the way they meet a washed up songstress, an Amish runaway and a swinging fraternity boy.
It hits the right buttons of amusing and heart warming, and the two leads are shat upon by life too often - although to be so much in love with the Cure in 2001 suggests a need for therapy. Clive looks too much like Edward Scissorhands for his own good, and turns in a sweet and convincing performance. Gypsy has the harder and potentially thankless role - the shy girl with the tough act - and just about pulls it off.
The packaging copyrights this as 2004, which I suspect is a freak of distribution - the repeated shots of the twin towers bring an unfortunate subtext that everything is about to come tumbling down.
Totals: 51 - [Cinema: 15; DVD: 33; Television: 3]
