V: Joanna Russ, And Chaos Died (1970)

Jai Vedh is existential challenged, aware of the void of the universe. And, to the horror of some of those around him, he is a homosexual. We know this because he tells us - although, aside from improper suggestions about him and a boy, he only has female sexual partners in the novel. He is travelling in a spaceship when the craft crashlands on an apparently rural planet, inhabited by telepaths. His lover/mentor Evne - Eve + n? - teaching him telekinesis, teleportation and mental skills, before they are rescued and take the skills back to Earth.

In the end, this is interesting for how later Russ novels aren't this - The Female Man taking on board feminism and female sexuality, We Who Are About To...) having a more realistic crash and so on. I read it now in preparation for a paper on gays in sf in the 1970s, but it doesn't necessarily have one. Interesting and frustrating for that reason.
