LI: Peter Robinson, Innocent Graves (1996)
The eighth Inspector Banks novel. The daughter of a prominent, wealthy man is found dead in a graveyard - and a number of suspects are identifiable: the oddly behaving vicar and his wife, a man sacked by the vicar and a tourist spotted at various parts of Eastvale. The girl's father is friends with a senior cop and a rapid arrest is required.
Indeed - and disconcertingly - an arrest is made early on, and the middle section of the book is taken up with a trial. Obviously a twist is needed, and delivered. Not all is as it seems.
As all too often, Robinson botches the ending by producing a diary for Banks to read and discover the full story. It always feels like a change of gear and clanks alarmingly.
