Academics or male academics? It's make your mind up time, Louise.
I'd like to think Sebastian Faulks could win but the last novel of his I read (oh allright, the only novel of his I've read) was a character's life in 26 alphabetical chapters and out of chronological order which is hardly lowest-common-denominator accessibility stuff even if not exactly BS Johnson.
