Yesterday ended late and today began early, which is not a good combination, and perhaps if yesterday had finished later, or even more likely earlier, things might have not come so close to being shaped like a pear.
I'd hummed and hahed about whether to take Once More * With Footnotes or Wintersmith to the pub, and settled on the former, which I wrapped in two plastic bags against the weather. Not that, as it turns out, I had time to read it, as the conversation flowed, and M beat me at chess twice, and then gave me a lift down to the Bell& where O and K were working. I had a couple more pints, and a sneaky half after hours, and clearly was more drunk than the alcohol warranted. I jumped at the offer of the lift home by O, trod in a puddle as I got out the car, shook O and K's hands, saluted O driving off, and went home, checked email, read a bit of Wintersmith, got to bed about 2.30am.
I was up at about 4am for a pee, then went back to bed.
I was up again at 7.30am and decided to do the old stick the radio on so I can sleep routine, when the gap in the memory hit me.
Where was Once More * With Footnotes?
Not in the house.
I'd read Wintersmith not Once More * With Footnotes. It wasn't by the bag where I'd picked that up.
I'd opened the front door and shut and bolted it, then discarded the jacket. Bag not by door.
I'd saluted O with my right hand. Was the bag in my left? I think I might have remembered swapping hands.
Back of O's car, as I'd struggled getting out. I don't remember the passenger seat hitting it.
Was I carrying it walking through town? No memory of that.
I did move it between hooks at the bar.
Front of M's car? No, had it later than that.
It's either in the Bell& or the back of O's car; he has my number but not vice versa.
The Bell& wouldn't open until 12.00, but NW would be there at 11.00. How early can I ring him? Not at 7.40, that's for sure. I try to sleep but can't. I plan for the worst and check how much it is on Amazon.co.uk. Ouch. Amazon.com is a cheaper price, even before dollar conversion but that's still a hundred quid.
I try marking the rest of batch of essays from last night, and get through them. Nearly ten. Can ring him. Eventually he answers, and at least I haven't woken him up. He rings back at 10.50 - yes, the bag is still on the hook. Phew. I go to the toilet for the tenth time today, and go back to bed.
