LX: Control (Anton Corbijn, 2007)

I've never been a Joy Division fan, but mention the name Ian Curtis and I would have said suicide, and I know the polygraph-style cover image, and recognise the songs if not beiong able to name them. This biopic, based on his wife's memoir (Debbie Curtis has a production credit, possibly as courtesy, as does Tony Wilson) tells a familiar story I am not placed to judge the accuracy.

Curtis marries in his teens and joins a band who struggle but find success - however the attention of groupies - in particular one woman - threatens his marriage. He promises to give her up, but doesn't. Then, on the brink of massive success...

I'm reminded of Stuart Sutcliffe of the Beatles, although it was the seizures that killed him, and of Jim Morrison (the vocals sound a bit like the Doors here), but an encounter with an epileptic in a Labour Exchange almost suggests Curtis is copying behaviour. The late seventies is recreated, but not fetishisticly. (Curtis has a paperback of Crash; I mean to return to see what else was on the shelf.)

Corbijn is a photographer, and did at least one sense with Joy Division (as well as various pop promos) and his decision to filk in glorious black and white avoids the kitch depiction of the decade. Sam Riley is utterly convincing as Curtis (although to be honest I have nothing to compare him with) and Samantha Morton presumably only did a couple of days' shooting in the rather thankless role of abandoned wife and mother. She presumably helped the backing getting secured by signing on to it. Worth a look.
