XLVIII: Jan Dunn, Ruby Blue (2007)
Ruby Blue is a racing pigeon, of good stock, destined to be a champion.

Jack (Bob Hoskins), recovering alcoholic, estranged father, recent widower and retured pigeon racing is becoming known as Grumpy Jack when he life is invaded - by eight year old Florrie (Jessica Stewart) dumped on him by a hippie mother, by glamorous French Stephanie (Josiane Balasko) and by local ruffian Ian (Jody Latham). Whilst Jack is bringing new hope to the lives of the kids - and being slowly romanced by Stephanie - he regains his life, in fact finds a life he never had when he was married. Unfortunately the local community is suspicious of children hanging around with a dirty old man, and when a child missing, he is number one suspect.

This is zero budget film making (£300,000, shot in Ramsgate, Deal, Dover and other parts of Thanet) with fantastic performances from Hoskins and Balasko which light up the screen. We're never in any doubt of Hoskins's innocence, and it is the witch hunt that we need to question (the couple behind me tutted his naivity). If Jack lightens up too fast, and Ian turns over a new leaf too rapidly, that is factor from a three week shoot with little enough time to demonstrate the passage of time. There is also a Twist, heavily telegraphed a good half hour before the reveal.

Pigeons clearly inherit their abilities from their parents - humans are more complicated.
