Christophe Gans, Le Pacte des loups (2001) (Brotherhood of the Wolf)

Something is butchering women in eighteenth century France. Grégoire de Fronsac (Samuel Le Bihan) arrives from Paris with his Irroqois companion Mani (Mark Dacascos) to capture the beast, deead or alive. Unfortunately his desire for both Marianne de Morangias (Émilie Dequenne) and Sylvia (Monica Bellucci) stirs up local trouble, with doesn't sit well with the way the wolf has imflamed the political situation - the wolf is seen as a judgement on the French king for his indulgence of philosophers. It's not until the genericly necessary kill occurs that de Fronsac can go after the real villains.

I think I was too exhausted to enjoy what looked to be a horror flick but turns out to be An Italian Werewolf in Marienbad or Joe Dante directs The Draftsman's Contract. It swings between historical epic, costume romp, martial arts kick ass, romance and buddy movie and I confess I found it hard to follow through the switches. The camera work is stunning, especially in the fight sequences, and there is a sense of it being in the tradition of cinema du look - or perhaps an historical version of the Taxi movies. The wolf itself is fine in close-up - but is almost as convincing as the wolf in that Doctor Who episode in Scotland when running.

Disappointing.
