Nobody ever believes me, but as a young girl in the 60's, I was taught that one of the uses of that battered and bruised apostrophe was as a signifier of something belonging - so "it's original shape" would have been correct. I think they stopped teaching that in 1969 or so, though.
To this day, I usually have to correct that at least once in most of my pieces. Sad, ain't it?
Tho' surely possessive pronouns wotsits were the exception even then, otherwise you'd have our's, their's, your's, her's and hi's. Its' is becoming more and more popular.
