I've got three deadlines bearing down on me at the end of the month, followed by another smaller one in mid November. Both weekends are going to be busy.

One is a professional deadline, and could make a considerable difference to what happens next year, and everyone says I should hit this.

One is a department one, and is a huge amount of fiddle for something that is more important than it really is.

One is an economic one where I've signed a contract and this is the fall back date.

Flashback: Last week we interviewed people. And people were confused to see me in a suit. But I know my semiotics. It had to be done. It meant I lost a day to interviewing which could have been spent on reaching deadline #3. And part of the next day, already a day from hell, to rubber stamp the decision.

Yesterday (Tuesday) my HoD wanted me to come in for a meeting with the new guy, but I resisted - I needed to work on deadline 3. So naturally I spent the morning sorting out the essay questions for four courses, watching the end of His Girl Friday (and falling alseep in parts), listening to the Archers, falling asleep, figuring I could work straight through, remembering that it was therapy at five, dealing with the emails from those who missed a meeting on Monday, going to therapy, going - oh alright then - to t'pub on the way home and getting caught by a fraught A who didn't want to be left alone with the ex-captain of the ladies' darts team, a phone call from the aged ps, dealing with some emails from contributors to said project with deadline ... and finally editing at gone midnight.

Tomorrow I'm headed north, with electronic versions of the text, but editing doesn't quite work that way. Plus my mate can't put me up, and so I had to try and find a hotel. The city appeared to be full, and Smoothhound offered me rooms for three times the price thirty miles away. Eventually I found somewhere - but it's a pain.

Have decided to screw department deadline, having delegated 5% of the task. Will figure I can write a covering letter speedily for professional deadline. Third deadline still looms

OK, better go pack.
