He has, in the past, been a fascinating director. But there's a thin line between critiquing the fetishistic voyeurism and providing fodder for it, especially in the portrayal of man on woman violence (but Blue Velvet did it so much more economically than three hours).
And I accept that he's so not about making literal sense.
