I have no particular brief for Mariella Frostrup, but kudos to her for skewering Sebastian Faulkes new series on books, whose episode on the hero character only contains one female hero out of seven. Apparently he's not telling that story. Perhaps he's telling the wrong story. It got worse. Apparently there are no heroes - although when she suggested counter examples these were suddenly genre rather than mainstream. I didn't recognise his version of what the study of English Lit is either

O Sebastian Faulks, bah. This is guy who makes big thing of having done research in A Certain Specialist Research Library (which has lots of books on Edwardian psychiatry!) but still nicked some C21st theory on brain disorder to plonk into his historical novel (the person who developed the theory in question was pretty irate, as I recall).
