Michael Crichton, The Andromeda Strain

Reread in preparation for a rewatch of the Wise film - which is reasonably faithful. A spaceprobe is brought down to Earth in the wilds of the US and turns out to have an alien virus on board which wipes out a town. Five scientists battle against time to find the cure.

Aspires to documentary, and we have extracts from reports and top secret documents, and lectures on biology. Drama is flagged by end of chapter "It was a mistake" type phrases and realism is achieved by things happening at 11.57 rather than about noon. A little dull, but it filled two train journeys.

XXXII: Larry Niven, Ringworld

Strange alien takes two humans and another strange alien to a strange planet. They crash, explore, come home. Remember, it's not size, it's what you do with it that matters. As dull as I feared.
