Or to paraphrase my memory of Thomas Merton's translation of Chuang Tzu - He who wants to have positive without negative does not understand the way - or in this general area

he who wants to have right without wrong,
Order without disorder,
Does not understand the principles
Of heaven and earth . . . They are correlative


I do ponder whether the RAE successor will not end up with negative citations weighed as much as positive - and sometimes you do wish to starve some writers of the oxygen of publicity (or to borrow from Linda Smith, the oxygen of oxygen).

As for those traumatised by books ... who knew words had the power? Will they firebomb Phelps?
