2009 Reading VI-VII
VI: Terrance Dicks, The Faceless Ones (1986)
The one where the little odd man in a frock coat lands the TARDIS at Gatwick with Ben, Polly and Jamie and uncovers an alien kidnapping ring. And presumably avoids meeting himself defeating War Machines. And is tracked by Daleks. Functional Dicks adaptation, rather insistent on hinting at the continuity of prior and subsequent adventures. I think I picked this up on the market - I'll complete my set if I see missing volumes,
but not with any urgency.
VII: Geoffrey Homes, Build My Gallows High (1946)
Homes's final, speedily filmed by Jacques Tourneur with Homes's own unfaithful script - Homes went on to script Invasion of the Body Snatchers. I've seen and enjoyed this - Robert Mitchum and Kirk Douglas - but recall little. Red runs a garage in a small town, trying to put a past behind him, when he is located by old associates and blackmailed into visiting Leonard Eels in New York. Once he gets there, he realises that he is at the centre of a frame up and has to extricate himself, dump his past and protect his new girlfriend. The switching view point is a little confusing, but is necessary for the plot to work - and it needs to be said that the plot is rather convoluted, verging on nested flashbacks. The alternate title, Out of the Past is appropriate.
Oh dear - 85 for the year projected. I want to do better than that.
