  • A new critical term - the sort of British disaster narrative in which one is mildly put out and can't get a decent cuppa: the tea cosy catastrophe
  • Wasn't this where we came in: a conference paper on what comes after the postmodern, to which I could feel my crosshairs focusing on some fishscales in a confined wooden area... That word post, with its ambiguity of rejection or continuation, not to mention the Lyotardian notion of the postmodern preceding the modern, always has me quivering: postmodern, poststructuralist, postcolonial all seem dubious terms to me. I don't know what post means, I told the speaker. "It means after," they answered. Thus was the point missed. Although Iconfess I invented the postsocratics, as I meant the presocratics, but some of the presocratics are after the Socratics, and all of the Preraphaelites are after Raphael.
  • It would be better if my hair clippers had conked out before I started shaving my head, rather than allowing me to shave enough to mean I couldn't leave the house. Fortunately I had sufficient razors to complete the job, but Pink made it look easy in Pink Floyd The Wall. My head is somewhat scratched. I have a minimum of tufts left, I hope.
