X: Joel and Ethan Coen, No Country for Old Men (2007)

I've long been a fan of the Coen brothers and, whilst I can see the argument that their parodic streak undercuts empathy with their characters, I think we do still care. Of late, however, I've not been so sure. I disliked Intolerable Clooney, which wasn't their own script, and didn't go near The Ladykillers with a ten-foot proverbial. So now we have their version of a neo-western, an adaptation of a Cormac MCarthy novel I haven't read.

I was flicking through a book in a charity shop, my interest snagged by the title, Noir, and the plot description on the back:

This book is set in France, 2027. The National Party are in power. One man wanders the streets of Paris haunted by the recollection of a young woman's bloodied corpse and tormented by the possibility that he was her murderer. The man is bemused at changes to his neighbourhood and with no idea what has occurred in his absence, he stumbles into an unrecognizable brave new world, only to discover that he has not been away from the city for days but for twelve years. Driven to discover his own history he rushes 'home', but his wife recoils from him, the neighbourhood he loves is disturbingly hostile and when he looks in the mirror, he sees nothing.

What really sold it though?

The mobile goes off as I'm leaving, and trying to convince myself that the front door is locked and everything is off that needs to be off. I've already ignored the phone once, and I don't think he'd try my mobile if he still has the number. It's a text rather than a call: B telling me that I need to be at the Clephan Building, 9.30, Saturday. That's good, I was right.
