Fifty up!
L: Peter Robinson, A Dedicated Man (1988)
One of the Chief Inspector Banks novels, of which I've read nine or so this year - see here. This is the second - and there's no mention of Jenny from the first book, but plenty of reminders that Banks has come north from London and isn't quite integrated into this society. A well loved historian is found next to a dry stone wall with his head stoved in, and Banks has to to disentangle the relationships within the village of Helmthorpe over the last decade to discover who has done it - his mentee and possible rival or lover, a publisher; a hack write of crime thrillers; a folk singer who's come home; the folk singer's father; a rival for a patch of land... It turns out there is a witness, but a little knowledge is a dangerous thing.
As is the case with the others at this stage, the crime is fine for most of the book. But once a character is arrested and charged, everyone has to gather together and explain the plot to each other. Clank. A shame.
