An Affair to Remember (Leo McCarey, 1957)

Chick-flick referenced in Sleepless in Seattle, but better than that might suggest (although it has been spoilered). Remake of the same director's Love Afffair - so can remakes be better than originals? (Suposibly it is the same script, but there are different credits. It is a film of two halves

Playboy Nickie Ferrante (Cary Grant) and Terry McKay (Deborah Kerr) are heading on a boat across the Atlantic to their respective marriages, but Ferrante can't help but make a play for McKay - especially as McKay resists his advances. However, she is worn down, although fear of scandal and exposure comes between them. On arrival at New York, they agree to meet in six month's time on the Empire State Building if they are going to marry after all. However...

The point of this kind of film is to stop its characters having sex (note the other kind of romantic comedy which tries to get its characters to have sex again, but again delays this. Grant has been partnerred with Katharine Hepburn and Irene Dunne before; here Kerr is splendid, handling the dialogue with aplomb.

Grant first appears midshot from above, descending a stairway - and one of the major seduction scenes involves them coming in and out of shot. There is also much play on what we can see (literally) that the characters can't.

I'm not sure about the second, darker, part of the film, but I suspect that if I hadn't seen Sleepless I might have liked it more.
