Spielberg always does The Triumph of the Nuclear Family despite all experience to the contrary. (Actually in Jaws he avoids the reunion that is grafted onto Empire of the Sun and lacking in the book of the latter.)
MR would have been better to end with Cruise in stasis - interestingly Vest suggests the dream ending as a result a la Videodrome and Brazil (but undercut in latter)
